A New Curriculum I Didn't Plan
1It’s been a while since I dusted off the link to the “Pastor’s Blog,” but recent events have made it the more obvious medium for my ministry to continue in ways that adapt to my new reality.
I’m not supposed to drive for a while (having a chunk taken out of your brain does that), so there will be fewer visits to your homes. I’m on a very restrictive diet, so meals and coffees spent talking over your questions will have to wait for another day. My body is weakening, so my times standing in front of you to lecture and preach will be less frequent. And while I welcome anyone to visit me for a chat while I’m homebound (and I do mean that sincerely), I have things I’d like to share with the whole of the flock with which God has entrusted me these past 9 years (and with anyone else who cares to ‘listen in’).
But while I’m here at home and my mind is still (arguably) working, it seems the Lord had a different curriculum in mind for me to teach the church this year. One I can see he has been preparing for me (and preparing me for), but one I had not put on my schedule. I only pray it will be of some benefit to his people in spite of my present weakness.
What will follow will be my reflections on death, ministry, salvation, suffering, fear, and how the gospel of Jesus Christ is all we need. In the meantime, here are some verses that have been on my mind a lot in the past week:
2 Chronicles 20:12 We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.
Psalm 62:11-12 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.
2 Timothy 1:7 God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
